Position Overview

Background 

The project “Empowerment of Minority Fishermen through Sustainable Fisheries Cooperatives” aims to enhance the livelihoods of minority fishing communities in Mogadishu through improved fisheries governance, value chain development, and cooperative strengthening. The project focuses on sustainable fishing practices, market access, and income generation.

Purpose of the Position 

The Value Chain Assistant will support the planning and implementation of fisheries value chain activities, ensuring effective coordination with fishermen cooperatives, traders, processors, and other stakeholders. The role contributes to improving market linkages, product quality, and income opportunities for minority fishermen.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist in mapping and analyzing the fisheries value chain, including production, processing, storage, transportation, and marketing.
  • Support the organization and strengthening of fishermen cooperatives and their engagement in value chain activities.
  • Assist in coordinating trainings on post-harvest handling, quality control, value addition, and basic business skills.
  • Support market assessments and identification of buyers and market opportunities.
  • Collect data and maintain records related to value chain performance and project indicators.
  • Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations.
  • Provide regular reports and updates to the Project Manager.
  • Perform any other duties related to value chain development as assigned.

NB: Employee duties are not limited only to the above-mentioned responsibilities; they may perform other duties as assigned

Skills and qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Agribusiness, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least 2–3 years of experience in value chain development, fisheries, agriculture, or livelihood projects.
  • Basic understanding of fisheries value chains and cooperative models.
  • Experience working with community-based organizations or cooperatives is an advantage.
  • Good data collection and reporting skills.
  • Strong communication skills in Somali; basic English is an advantage.
  • Ability to work effectively with minority and vulnerable communities.
  • Willingness to travel within Mogadishu as required.
